Automatic Knives: What They Are, How They Work, and What to Buy

Automatic knives open entirely by spring tension — you actuate a button, lever, or slide and the blade deploys under its own power. Side-opening automatics swing out like a traditional folder from a pivot on one side. OTFs shoot the blade straight forward from the handle and retract the same way. Both are fast. OTFs are faster. Both require periodic maintenance of the spring and lockup mechanism.

The legal situation varies by state and often by blade length. Most states allow ownership for adults. Carry restrictions are where it gets more specific. Texas allows automatic knives with blades under 5.5 inches for carry. Know your state's laws before you carry — ownership for home and collection use is broadly permitted.

Side-Opening vs. OTF: Which Is the Better Automatic?

Side-openers are mechanically simpler and generally more robust — fewer moving parts means fewer failure points. OTFs are mechanical achievements: a dual-action that fires and retracts with the same button requires real precision engineering. They're more sensitive to debris and need more maintenance. For a daily carry knife you'll use hard: side-opening wins. For the pure experience of a precision mechanical deployment: nothing touches a quality OTF.
