Push Daggers: History, Design, and What Makes Them Interesting

The push dagger's defining feature is handle orientation — the grip runs perpendicular to the blade, so the blade extends from between the fingers when the fist is closed. The result is a knife that deploys with a punching motion rather than a stabbing one, and that requires almost no technique to use effectively under stress. The design saw widespread use in the American West and Civil War era and remains one of the most distinctive blade profiles in the collector market.

Modern push daggers range from belt-clip carry knives in Kydex sheaths to dramatic decorative pieces in bold shapes and finishes. The classic double-edged dagger grind with a symmetrical point is the traditional profile. Single-edge versions with a flat spine also exist and are slightly more forgiving of manufacturing tolerances.
