How to Build a Real Outdoor and Survival Gear Kit

Survival gear gets purchased one of two ways: all at once in a panic that produces a pile of mismatched items nobody's ever tested, or deliberately over time with each piece understood before it's depended on. The second approach produces gear that actually performs. The first produces a false sense of security.

Start with the survival rule of threes: three minutes without air, three hours without shelter in extreme conditions, three days without water, three weeks without food. This is your priority order for gear selection. A good knife, a fire starter, a water filter, and a signaling device cover more ground than a kit loaded with gadgets and light on fundamentals.

Gear That Gets Used vs. Gear That Gets Stored

The best survival gear is gear you use before you need it. Carry your fire starter on camping trips. Run water through your filter at home before depending on it in the field. Use your paracord for real tasks. Gear that's never been operated under non-emergency conditions will surprise you at the worst possible time.
