How to Choose the Right Pepper Spray: Size, Formula, and What the Percentages Mean

The active ingredient in pepper spray is oleoresin capsicum (OC) — the same compound that makes hot peppers hot, concentrated and suspended in a carrier solution. OC concentration percentage matters less than Scoville Heat Units (SHU) and carrier quality. A 1% formula with high SHU and good suspension outperforms a 10% formula with poor carrier quality in real-world deployment.

Formula type changes how the spray behaves. Stream provides a precise, concentrated stream with 10–15 foot range — accurate, less wind-affected, good for outdoor use. Cone creates a wide mist pattern that covers the face area without requiring precise aim under stress. Gel clings to the face and resists blowback in wind. Fogger creates a large dispersal cloud — maximum coverage, most affected by wind.

Pepper Spray Carry and Expiration

Pepper spray has a shelf life — typically 2–4 years from manufacture date. An expired canister may have reduced pressure, degraded formula, or a clogged delivery mechanism. Replace annually if carried regularly. Store away from extreme heat. Test fire once per canister into open air to confirm the mechanism works and you understand the spray pattern before you depend on it.
