Throwing Knives: How to Choose Your First Set and Actually Learn the Skill

The most important thing about throwing knives is that they need to be throwing knives — designed specifically for the rotational stress, impact loads, and balance requirements of the sport. A kitchen knife thrown at a target bends. A throwing knife does not. Dedicated throwing knives are balanced, constructed, and heat-treated for what they're being asked to do.

For beginners, sets of three are the practical starting point — throw all three before walking to the target, building technique through repetition. Most beginners start with the half-spin at 10–12 feet. As consistency improves, distance increases in half-spin increments, each step adding another half rotation and requiring a slightly adjusted release.

Knife Specs That Matter for Throwing

Weight: 200–300 grams (7–10 oz) is the practical range for most learners. Length in the 12–16 inch range gives predictable rotation. Avoid knives with separate handle and blade sections — the joint is always the failure point. Single-piece construction only for anything you'll throw with any regularity.
