Pepper Spray vs Mace: What the Difference Actually Is and Which to Buy

Pepper spray vs mace explained: Mace is a brand and originally a tear-gas formula, pepper spray is OC; how stream, foam and fog differ.

By South Summit Team. Updated September 12, 2026. Every pick was in stock at the listed price when this was updated.

"Mace" started as a brand name for a tear-gas (CN) spray in the 1960s and became the generic word people use for any defensive spray. Modern products sold as Mace are mostly pepper spray, which uses OC (oleoresin capsicum, from chili peppers). So the honest answer to "pepper spray vs mace" is: today they are usually the same thing, and what matters is the formula and the spray pattern. This explains both and ranks the sprays in stock. How we ranked these

Every product on southsummit.com carries a 30-day order score recalculated daily from real orders across our store network. The picks below are the in-stock items with the highest score on the day of the last update, in that order, and each one is checked against its listed specifications. This is not a hands-on torture test and nothing here is sponsored; it is what buyers chose with their own money, explained.

OC, CN and CS

OC is pepper: an inflammatory agent that works on contact. Every spray on this site is OC. CN is the original tear gas in old Mace; CS is the military-style tear gas. Both are irritants rather than inflammatories, take longer to act, and are less effective on people who are intoxicated. Some products combine OC with CS or a UV marking dye; the product page says so.

Stream, foam, fog

Stream sprays fire a narrow jet 8 to 10 feet and are least affected by wind: the keychain and flip-top canisters. Foam sticks and does not drift, for indoors. Fog fills an area and reaches farther but blows back. Details and the ranked list are in best pepper spray.

Frequently asked questions

Is mace the same as pepper spray?

Mace is a brand; most products sold as Mace today are pepper (OC) spray. Original Mace was CN tear gas.

Which is stronger, mace or pepper spray?

OC pepper spray acts faster and works on more people than CN or CS tear gas; that is why nearly all defensive sprays are OC now.

What pepper spray should I buy?

For carry, the Instinct Shield keychain spray by orders; foam for indoors.
