Stream, foam or fog
Stream (all the keychain and flip-top canisters above) fires a narrow jet to about 8 to 10 feet and is least affected by wind. It is the everyday-carry format. Foam sticks where it lands and does not drift back, which is why it is sold as indoor-safe. Fog fills an area and reaches farther but blows back in wind; the Fog Shield is a home and vehicle canister, not a pocket spray.
Keychain hard-shell or flip-top
Keychain hard-shell sprays sit in a case with a quick-release clip and are drawn with the keys; they are the most-ordered format because they are always on you. Flip-top canisters are slightly larger, have a safety cap that flips under the thumb, and live in a pocket or bag. Either is fine; pick on where you will carry it.
Shelf life and practice
Replace pepper spray every two to three years; the propellant loses pressure. Buy two of the keychain sprays and use one to practice the draw and a short test burst outdoors, downwind, so the first time you press it is not the real one.
