Ballistic Plate Carriers: What They Are, How They Work, and What to Look For

A plate carrier is the vest platform that holds ballistic plates — it positions hard armor against the chest and back and provides MOLLE attachment points for additional equipment. The carrier itself provides no ballistic protection. Protection comes entirely from the plates it holds. Choosing a plate carrier means choosing a platform that fits your plate size correctly, adjusts for your body dimensions, and distributes plate weight in a way that doesn't compromise movement.

Most civilian plate carriers accept standard 10x12 inch plates — the most common size for medium/large builds. Plate pockets need to be sized for your specific plates, including profile (single-curve vs. multi-curve) and thickness. An ill-fitting pocket allows plates to shift under movement, which reduces protection coverage and creates discomfort that degrades how long you can realistically wear the carrier.

How to Properly Fit a Plate Carrier

The front plate should sit with its top edge approximately 1 inch below the suprasternal notch (the hollow at the base of the throat). This positions the plate to protect the vital zone — heart, lungs, major vessels — while allowing full range of arm and shoulder motion. The carrier should be snugged until it doesn't shift with movement but doesn't restrict deep breathing.
