Which Batteries Do You Actually Need for Tactical and EDC Gear?

Most EDC and tactical gear runs on one of three types: CR123A lithium cells, AA/AAA alkaline, or rechargeable 18650s. CR123A batteries are the standard for high-output flashlights — they hold voltage under load far better than alkalines and have a shelf life measured in years, not months. If you're running any quality tactical light, you're running CR123s.

AA and AAA alkalines cover a wide range of budget and mid-tier flashlights, headlamps, and accessories. Keep a rotation in your kit — they're cheap insurance. For gear you use daily, rechargeable options pay for themselves quickly and reduce the replace-when-dead guessing game.

How Long Can You Actually Store Batteries?

Lithium primaries like CR123A cells are rated for up to 10 years in storage. Alkalines run 5–7 years. Store everything at room temperature, away from heat and humidity, and check your gear's charge at least twice a year. A battery sitting in your emergency flashlight for three years without a check is a battery you can't trust.
