For most buyers, the best balisong handle material is plain steel. It is heavy, hard to dent, and the most common listed handle material in our stock. The one we would hand most people is the Shadowline CNC Flow Butterfly Knife in matte black ($21.99). It has steel handles, a 4.625-inch spear point and a listed weight of 5.96 ounces, and it has the highest 30-day order dollar volume of any balisong we stock. Skip it if you want a lighter knife (look at aluminum) or a small one. If you cannot flip yet, start on a blunt trainer.

How we ranked these
Each pick is the knife with the highest 30-day order dollar volume in one listed handle material on our butterfly knives collection. We also added the top steel model with a titanium finish, because the name alone can mislead. The order is 30-day order dollar volume across our store network, highest first: the knives buyers chose with their own money over the last 30 days, all in stock on the day of publication. This is not a hands-on test and nothing here is sponsored. Handle materials, weights and lengths come from each product's listed specifications.

How to choose a balisong handle material
Start with weight. Artisan Cutlery puts steel at about 7.8 g/cm³, titanium at about 4.5 and aluminum at about 2.7, and notes that light aluminum handles carry less momentum during aerials. Knife Pivot Lube describes steel as "very heavy in the hand but also very durable" and calls titanium the most ideal handle material because it is lighter than steel.
Material is not the whole story. On our shelf, the wood-handled Heritage Rhythm (4.23 oz) is lighter than the aluminum Verdant Groove (4.31 oz), and it is also a shorter knife (8.625 against 9.25 inches open). Compare listed weights and lengths, not the material name alone.
Then wear and grip:
- Aluminum is lighter and much cheaper than titanium but less durable, according to Knife Pivot Lube. Artisan Cutlery says it dents more easily than titanium or steel, and Knife Pivot Lube adds that it may feel slippery.
- Steel handles need regular care to stay rust-free. Stainless resists corrosion better than carbon steel (Artisan Cutlery).
- Titanium resists rust and is typically the most expensive option across the market.
- G10 has strong grip but can chip or crack if dropped on hard surfaces. None of our in-stock butterfly knives list G10 or carbon fiber handles.
Alloy grade and handle construction
Two specs separate higher-end handles, and neither appears on our listings. Knife Pivot Lube distinguishes 6061 aluminum, which it calls the best budget aluminum, from 7075, which is alloyed with zinc to make it stronger and more expensive.
Construction is the other. Knife Pivot Lube describes channel handles as machined from a single piece of material. It calls them generally sturdier, with fewer parts to break or lose, though heavier and less customizable. Sandwich handles are built from two slabs, with spacers at the bottom to keep the gap even and optional scales on top. They are very customizable, but the extra parts can go wrong or get lost.
Our catalog lists neither the aluminum grade nor the construction for any of these knives. We will not guess at them, and a model name is no evidence either way.
Price on our shelf
Every butterfly knife we stock is under $25. Our one titanium-handled model costs less than the steel Shadowline, and all six aluminum models cost under $20. At these prices, choose on listed weight, size and look.
Read the listed handle material, not the product name. "Titanium" in a name here usually describes a finish on steel. One model lists a marbleized handle, and some list only "metal."
If you are still learning, use a trainer in the same material. Most models on our butterfly knife trainers collection list steel handles. For the full ranking across every material, see the best butterfly knives list. Opening and closing basics are in the balisong beginner's guide.
Balisong handle questions
What is the best balisong handle material?
Steel suits most buyers because it is heavy and durable. Titanium is lighter than steel and resists rust, and aluminum is lighter still but dents more easily.
Is a "titanium" butterfly knife made of titanium?
Not always. Five of our steel-handled models list titanium as the finish, and only the Quiet Vector lists titanium as the handle material.
Are aluminum balisongs good?
They are light and cheaper than titanium, which suits buyers who want a quicker knife. The trade-off is less momentum in aerials and handles that can dent or feel slippery.
What balisong handle types do you carry?
The listed materials in stock are steel, stainless steel, stainless steel with wood, aluminum, acrylic, wood, titanium and marbleized, plus some models listed only as metal. We have no G10 or carbon fiber balisongs in stock right now.
