A mini switchblade is a side-opening automatic small enough for a coin pocket. We have 25 in stock, and all but one cost $17 or less. Most buyers should get the Road Rebel Quick-Deploy Automatic Knife in matte black ($9.99). It is the most-ordered mini of the last 30 days, and its listing has what a small carry knife needs: a 1.75-inch clip point blade, a 3.25-inch closed length, a pocket clip and a safety switch. Skip it if you want the most edge a mini can give you. The 2.5-inch models further down are for you.
All of these sit in our automatic knives collection. If you meant an out-the-front mini, the OTF section below covers it.

How we ranked these
Every product has a 30-day order score, which is the dollar value of its orders across our store network over the last 30 days. To count as a mini here, a knife had to be in stock on the day of publication and its listing had to give an overall length of 5.75 inches or less (20 knives). Where no overall length is listed, it had to give a 2-inch blade (5 more). The 10 highest-scoring of those 25 appear below in score order. Nobody tested them by hand and nothing is sponsored. This is what buyers picked with their own money, described from each product's listed specs.

Mini switchblade OTF options
Some people who search "mini switchblade OTF" want a blade that comes straight out of the front of the handle. Side-opening and out-the-front knives work differently. A side-opener uses a spring that swings the blade out when you press the button, and you close it by working a release. An OTF slides its blade out of the front. Those knives live on our OTF knives page, and two minis there outsold every side-opening mini over the last 30 days: the Kawaii Click Confidence Mini OTF ($15.99) and the Kawaii Contrast Mini OTF ($15.99).
Both are double action, meaning the same slide extends and retracts the blade. In the owner's words: "Every OTF knife we sell is double action. We do not carry single-action OTF knives." A single action springs the blade out but requires manual retraction, using a cocking arm on the handle. We don't stock that type.
How to choose a mini switchblade pocket knife
Size is the reason to buy a mini, so start there. TEKTO, writing about its own small automatic, says a working automatic rarely gets under about 3 inches closed and that "the right answer is the smallest knife that still does the job." The top 10 here run from 2.75 to 3.35 inches closed.
- Blade length runs from 1.75 to 2.5 inches. That is enough for boxes, tape, cord and packaging. If you want the most edge with a clip, the Shadowline Pocket Automatic Knife ($6.99) lists a 2.5-inch blade and a pocket clip.
- A safety stops the button from firing in your pocket. Some side-opening switchblades have a safety that prevents the release from being pressed by accident. Ten of the 25 minis list one. If the knife will ride next to keys, pick one of those.
- Check the clip. 18 of the 25 list a pocket clip, and 7 do not.
- Steel is listed on only some models. The four micro stilettos list 440C, a stainless steel that Artisan Cutlery says resists rust far better than carbon steel and sharpens like a conventional steel. Most of the others say only "steel" or give no blade material, and we can't tell you the grade.
- Pick a look. The micro stilettos have spear point blades and a slim Italian stiletto shape. The utility minis use clip or drop points with black, silver or red blades.
Rules on switchblades differ by state and city, so check yours before ordering. For bigger automatics, see our best automatic knives under $50. For how the springs and releases work, read how automatic knives work.
Questions buyers ask
What is the smallest switchblade you sell?
Three automatics tie at 4.75 inches open and 3 inches closed. The Shadowline Micro Auto ($8.99) sells the most of them. The Heritage Snap in polished wood ($9.99) is the one with a listed pocket clip.
Should I get a mini switchblade or a mini OTF?
Get a side-opening mini if you want the lowest price and a clip point or drop point blade; most of ours cost $11 or less. Get a mini OTF if you want the blade to come out of the front and retract with the same slide. Every OTF we carry is double action and works that way.
Can I put a mini switchblade knife on a keychain?
None of the minis here list a keyring hole or lanyard loop. They are pocket knives, and 18 of the 25 list a pocket clip.
Is a 2-inch blade enough for everyday carry?
For boxes, tape, cord, zip ties and packaging, yes. TEKTO says the same about its 1.85-inch automatic and adds that a blade that size is not for slicing or dressing game.
