Flipper, thumb stud, or lockback

Flippers open with a tab on the spine and, on the ball-bearing models (Heraldic Drift, Lava Line, Midnight Stiletto), snap open with almost no effort. Thumb-stud folders open with a stud on the blade; slower but with fewer moving parts. Lockbacks (Heirloom Carve) are the traditional pattern: a spring bar locks the blade and you press it to close; slow, strong, and the one to give someone who has never owned a modern folder.

Micarta, G10 or carbon fiber pattern

Micarta is layered fabric in resin: grippy when wet and it wears in rather than out, which is why it dominates the best-sellers. G10 is a fiberglass laminate, harder and more textured. The "carbon fiber" folders at $12 are a printed pattern on a lighter frame, not carbon sheet; they are fine knives, but buy them for the look, not the material.

Carry

All of these have a pocket clip and 3 to 3.5 inch blades, under the common blade-length threshold in most places. Manual folders are the least restricted knife type, which is the reason to choose one over an automatic if you travel. What is an EDC knife covers the rest of the decision.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best pocket knife under $25?

By orders, the Ballistic Flow micarta folder. For a flipper, the Heraldic Drift ball-bearing knife.

Are ball bearing pocket knives worth it?

At $16 here, yes: the action is noticeably smoother than a washer pivot and there is no price penalty.

What is a lockback knife?

A folder with a spring-loaded bar along the spine that locks the blade open; you press the bar to close it. The Heirloom Carve is the lockback in this list.
