A brass knuckles finish name tells you the color, and the material line tells you the metal. Most buyers should get solid brass. The Forge-Born Heritage Knuckle Paperweight ($15.99) lists brass for both color and material and weighs a listed 6.4 oz. It also had the highest 30-day order dollar volume of any knuckle piece we sell. Bare brass darkens as you handle it and can be cleaned back. Skip it if you want a black look. The top seller in black is the steel Clockwork Grip ($11.99), though its listing does not name its coating and we have not tested how it wears.

How we ranked these
We grouped every in-stock piece by the color and material its product record lists. Each pick is the top seller in its group by 30-day order dollar volume across our store network, and the list runs in that order. Not every group is shown. These are the pieces buyers chose with their own money, in stock at the listed price on the day of publication. We did not run a hands-on test and no brand paid for a spot.
A gold color is not the same as brass
The brass knuckles category has 52 pieces in stock, and 10 of them list gold as their color. Only two of those list brass as the material: the Atlas Reach XL ($21.99) and the Legacy Mirror-Finish Heritage Knuckles ($15.99). Two list steel, like the Pocket Guardian ($6.99). Five list only "Metal", like the Monolith Authority belt buckle ($7.99), and one lists no material at all.
When the metal is what you are paying for, read the material line and ignore the color word. Our brass knuckle materials comparison covers how brass, steel and alloy pieces differ.
Brass knuckles finish options in stock, ranked
1. Forge-Born Heritage Knuckle Paperweight - Solid Brass
Listed as brass in a brass color, 6.4 oz, 4.25 by 2.375 in and 0.4375 in thick, at $15.99. Engineer Fix says skin oils and salts speed up tarnish on brass, and that the slow, even darkening called patina is the kind most owners like. The listing does not say whether the surface is lacquered.

6. Foundry Anchor Minimalist Knuckle Belt Buckle - Polished Copper
Listed as copper for both material and color, with "polished" in the name, at $7.99. The Skull Emblem ($9.99) is the other listed copper piece.

8. Rose Shield Compact Grip Self-Defense Knuckles - Pink Steel
Pink on steel at $6.99, listed at 3.875 by 2.125 in, the smallest listed frame among these picks. The same listed dimensions come in purple ($6.99), teal ($6.99), blue ($6.99) and sky blue ($6.99) steel. The Cupcake Sprinkles ($7.99) is also pink but lists metal, not steel.

9. Skull Relic Heritage Brass Knuckle - Antique Brass
The only piece in stock with antique brass as its listed color, listed as brass with a skull theme, at $9.99. Aged looks are common elsewhere too. DLT Trading sells solid brass knuckles in a "vintage patina" finish that it says keeps darkening where handled, and Sharp Things lists a cast brass piece with a "Forced Patina" finish and notes that each piece varies.

How to choose a brass knuckles finish
Read the material line first. A gold, bronze or copper color word means little until the listed material agrees with it.
Then decide whether you want the piece to age. Bare brass and copper darken with handling, and Engineer Fix covers simple ways to clean off light tarnish. Clear lacquer can hold off tarnish on brass for years, Engineer Fix says, but once it is scratched, tarnish spreads underneath. Our listings do not say which pieces are lacquered.
For black, silver, rainbow and colored-steel pieces, the listings name a color and a base metal but not the coating process. We cannot tell you how long any of those colors last, and we have not tested them.
Texture is a matter of taste. CE Blades sells cast brass knuckles described as "Cast Solid – Not Plated" with a deliberately rough finish, and our Legacy Mirror-Finish ($15.99) goes the other way, with a polished look in its name.
Check your state and city rules before ordering. Every finish is on the brass knuckles collection, and the overall sales ranking is in best brass knuckles.
Brass knuckles finish questions
Is a gold finish the same as solid brass?
No. Of the 10 gold-colored pieces in stock, only 2 list brass as the material. The rest list steel, "Metal" or no material.
How do you fix tarnished brass knuckles?
For light tarnish, Engineer Fix suggests a paste of lemon juice and baking soda or a commercial brass cleaner. Test it on a hidden spot first, then rinse and dry the piece completely.
Why buy brass knuckles over steel ones?
Pick brass if you like a finish that darkens with handling and can be cleaned back. The steel pieces here come in black, silver, chrome, gold, pink, purple, teal and blue, and their listings do not say how the color is applied. Listed weights vary by piece: the steel Clockwork Grip is 11.3 oz and the brass Forge-Born is 6.4 oz.
Are there black knuckles that list brass as the material?
Yes. The Calm Anchor Wide-Frame paperweight ($7.99) lists brass as its material and black as its color.
Do rainbow knuckles fade?
We have not tested it, and none of the four rainbow listings names its coating process. We cannot say how long the color lasts.
