Damascus OTF Knife Guide: Patterns, Blade Steels and In-Stock Picks

By South Summit Team. Updated November 5, 2026. Every pick was in stock at the listed price when this was published.

A Damascus OTF knife here is an out-the-front automatic with a Damascus pattern on the blade. We stock 12, and all cost between $36 and $43. Most buyers should get the Vector Surge Front-Switch OTF Knife in Blue Damascus ($39.99). It had the highest 30-day order dollar volume of any Damascus OTF. Its listing gives a 3-inch spear point, 7.25 inches open, 4.375 inches closed, 2.85 ounces, a pocket clip and a deluxe sheath. If you buy a knife for its steel grade, skip the Damascus models, because none of the 12 lists one. The D2, AUS-8 and 440C picks are further down.

How we ranked these

Each pick is ranked by its 30-day order dollar volume across our store network. That is money buyers spent, not a count of units. Every pick was in stock on the day this was published. Picks 1 to 6 are the six Damascus OTFs with the highest order dollar volume, in order. Picks 7 to 10 lead their listed steel, also in order. We did not test these knives by hand, and nothing here is sponsored. Each description uses only the product's listed specs.

In the owner's words, "Every OTF knife we sell is double action." The same switch pushes the blade out and pulls it back in. All of them are on our OTF knives page.

Is a Damascus OTF knife real Damascus?

Our listings don't say, and we won't guess. Almost all Damascus sold today is pattern welded. Two steels are forge-welded and folded into layers, often a high-carbon steel such as 1084 or 1095 with a nickel steel such as 15N20, and the pattern runs through the blade. The common fake is a single steel with the pattern laser-etched, stenciled or printed on the flats. A surface pattern stops at the bevel and wears off where the blade is sharpened. Real layered blades are acid-etched too, so the word "etch" on a listing doesn't prove the pattern is fake.

Here is what our product records say about the 12 Damascus OTFs:

  • 7 list an etched finish ("Damascus Etch", "Etch", "Etched" or "Damascus etched").
  • 4 list the finish only as "Damascus", and 1 lists "Anodized".
  • 2 list "Damascus" as the blade material.
  • None gives a layer count, a steel pairing or a grade.

Other Damascus OTF listings we read show what fuller details look like. One names 1095/15N20 steel and a layer count of 176 to 180. A $650 double-action model credits a named Damascus maker. A "Damascus-style" OTF at around $35 gives no construction details at all. Our 12 sit with that last group on paper: any of them could be layered steel or a surface pattern. Buy them for the look. Our guide to Damascus steel covers how it is made.

How to choose between a Damascus pattern and a named steel

Start with the job. Damascus suits a collection piece or a gift. For hard daily work, TEKTO recommends modern powder steels and says a good one "will hold an edge longer and resist rust better" than most Damascus. None of our listings calls a blade powder steel, so the named-steel picks only tell you the grade. They don't promise that edge life.

If you shop for Damascus anywhere, look for a stated layer count, named steels and a credited maker. A high price doesn't prove construction and a low one doesn't disprove it.

The steel guides we read say this about the listed grades:

  • D2: Extac rates it "great" for edge retention but "not completely immune to rust and corrosion". The Knife Connection says it "will rust if you don't care for it properly".
  • 440C: both guides call it corrosion resistant and easy to sharpen. They disagree on edge holding. Extac says it holds an edge well, and The Knife Connection says it "does not hold an edge long".
  • AUS-8: Extac lists good edge retention, high corrosion resistance and easy sharpening. The Knife Connection calls it "a reasonably good budget stainless steel".
  • Plain "440" and blades listed only as "steel" have no letter grade to compare.

Then pick a size. Among the six Damascus picks, the three 7.25-inch models have 3-inch blades. The other three open to 9 inches or more, with blades from 3.25 to 3.75 inches. Care is the same for all of them: dry the blade after use, keep a light coat of oil on it, and don't store it in a leather sheath, which holds moisture against the steel. Our knife steel guide covers grades in more depth. Rules on automatic knives vary, so check your state and city rules before ordering.

Damascus OTF questions buyers ask

Are Damascus knives good?

A Damascus blade is only as good as its steels and heat treatment. Our Damascus OTF listings name neither, so we can't tell you how they cut.

Does the Damascus pattern wear off?

A pattern added only to the surface wears off where the blade is sharpened. A layered pattern runs through the steel. Our listings don't say which kind each knife has.

How much does a real Damascus OTF knife cost?

The Damascus OTF listings we read ran from around $35 for a "Damascus-style" blade with no details to $650 for one that credits a named Damascus maker. TEKTO says hand forging takes hours and the blade carries that cost, but price alone doesn't prove how a blade was made. Our 12 Damascus OTFs cost $36 to $43, and none lists a layer count.

Is there a single-action Damascus OTF here?

No. On a single-action OTF the switch only pushes the blade out, and you reset it by hand. We don't stock single-action OTFs, and every Damascus model here is double action.
