How Do Stun Guns Work? The Science Behind Electrical Self-Defense

Voltage, amperage, and what actually happens when a stun gun makes contact.

Electricity as a Defensive Tool

Stun guns use electricity to disrupt the body's voluntary muscle control. The concept is straightforward: deliver enough electrical energy to override the brain's signals to the muscles, causing involuntary contraction, pain, and temporary incapacitation. No chemicals, no projectiles, no permanent injury.

But the details matter. Understanding how stun guns actually work helps you choose the right one and use it effectively.

Voltage vs. Amperage: What Matters

Manufacturers advertise voltage because big numbers sell. But voltage and amperage play different roles:

  • Voltage — Determines how far the electrical arc can jump and how well it penetrates clothing. Higher voltage means the current can bridge thicker fabrics. Think of voltage as the push.
  • Amperage (current) — Determines the actual energy delivered to the body. This is what causes muscle disruption. Think of amperage as the flow.
  • Duration — How long the current flows determines severity. Brief contact (under 1 second) causes pain. Sustained contact (3-5 seconds) causes muscle disruption and temporary incapacitation.

All commercial stun guns operate in a safe amperage range — typically 1 to 4 milliamps. This is far below the threshold (100-200 milliamps) that can cause cardiac arrest. The voltage is high (thousands to millions of volts) but the current is low. High voltage, low amperage = painful but non-lethal.

What Happens on Contact

When a stun gun's probes make contact with a person:

  1. Current flows between the probes — The electrical circuit completes through the body tissue between the two contact points
  2. Muscles contract involuntarily — The electrical signal overrides the brain's motor signals, causing muscles in the contact area to clench
  3. Pain response activates — The nervous system registers intense pain from the electrical stimulation of pain receptors
  4. Energy depletion — With sustained contact (3+ seconds), the muscles exhaust their glucose supply rapidly, making it difficult for the target to control their body
  5. Recovery begins immediately — Once the stun gun is removed, normal muscle function returns within seconds to minutes with no permanent damage

Probe Spacing Matters

The distance between the two probes determines how much muscle tissue the current passes through. Wider spacing = more muscle disruption. This is why stun guns with probes at the top and bottom of the device (wider spacing) tend to be more effective than those with closely spaced probes at the tip.

Why the Arc Matters

Activating a stun gun in the air produces a visible electrical arc and a loud crackling sound. This is not just for show — it serves a critical defensive function:

  • Visual deterrent — The bright, rapid sparking between the probes is instinctively threatening
  • Auditory deterrent — The crackling sound is alarming and associative — most people recognize what a stun gun sounds like
  • Pre-contact resolution — Many confrontations end when the attacker sees and hears the arc without any physical contact needed

This deterrent value is one of the strongest arguments for carrying a stun gun — it provides a non-contact resolution option that pepper spray and physical tools do not.

Safety Features

Modern stun guns include safety mechanisms to prevent accidental discharge:

  • On/off safety switch — Physical switch that must be deliberately engaged before the trigger will fire
  • Trigger guard — Prevents accidental trigger activation in a pocket or purse
  • Wrist strap disable pin — Some models include a wrist strap with a disable pin. If the stun gun is taken from you, the pin pulls out and disables the device

Choose Your Stun Gun
