How to choose an OTF knife: decide the size first, then the action, then blade shape and handle. Most first-time buyers want a mid-size double action with a 3-inch blade and a pocket clip. The one we would hand most of them is the Vector Surge Front-Switch OTF Knife at $39.99. It lists a 3-inch spear point, double action, a clip and a deluxe sheath, and it has the highest 30-day order volume of any OTF in stock that lists double action. Skip it if you want a named blade steel, because its listing gives no blade material. Skip it too if you want something near 5 inches overall, where the minis below fit.

How to choose an OTF knife in four decisions
Size first
Most OTF listings here give a blade length and an overall length, though a few leave out one or both. The ones that list them fall into five bands:
| Band | Overall length | Blade length | Prices in stock today |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini | 5 to 5.75 in | 1.875 to 2 in | $12 to $27 |
| Compact | 6.75 to 7.125 in | 2.5 to 2.875 in | $30 to $40 |
| Mid-size | 7.25 to 8.5 in | 2.75 to 3.5 in | $33 to $43, plus four aircraft-alloy AUS-8 models at $76 |
| Full-size | 8.75 to 9.75 in | 3.25 to 4 in | $17 to $58, plus aircraft-alloy AUS-8 models at $76 to $83 |
| XL | 10 to 11 in | 4.35 to 4.75 in | $43 to $52 (five listings) |
The bands come from the listed specs of the OTFs in stock today. A listing that is missing a length is left out of the band that depends on it.
BladeOps calls 3 to 4 inches the most versatile blade length and suggests about 3 inches for everyday carry. Knife Depot says shorter blades are easier to carry and longer ones cut with more power. For a pocket knife you will use often, start in the mid-size band. Minis suit a small pocket or a gift. Full-size knives work better in a bag or on a belt, and both full-size picks below list a nylon sheath or holster.
Then the action
A double action fires and retracts the blade on the same switch. A single action fires on the switch, and retracting it is manual. Knife Depot and BladeOps both describe it that way. Knife Depot calls double action the most popular choice for most buyers and describes single action as simpler and more durable. BladeOps also calls single action more rugged. Urban EDC adds that a double action has more intricate internal parts, which affects both cost and upkeep. Our guide to how OTF knives work covers the spring and carriage.
Our advice: get a double action if you will open and close the knife many times a day. Get a single action if you like a particular design and don't mind retracting it by hand. A few best-sellers, the Kawaii Click among them, don't state the action at all. If the action is what decides it for you, buy from a listing that states it.
Blade shape and edge
Knife Depot describes the spear point as symmetrical and balanced, the tanto as strong at the tip, the drop point as a versatile all-rounder, and the dagger as double-edged and mostly for collecting or display. Our dagger listings show a plain edge but don't say whether both sides are sharpened, so check the photos if that is important to you. Drop points are scarce among the OTFs here, and the Contrast Android is one of the few. BladeOps points buyers who cut dense material toward a tanto or a partly serrated edge. All but one of the nine picks below are spear points or daggers.
Handle last
BladeOps describes aluminum as light, strong and corrosion-resistant, G-10 as grippy in wet weather, carbon fiber as light but less impact-resistant, and textured polymer as the budget option. Knife Depot treats aluminum as the standard. The cheapest full-size OTFs in stock, at $17, all use ABS plastic handles.
Steel, and what the price buys
Knife Depot says quality OTFs usually use 440C or D2. It also names S30V, which no OTF here lists. It warns that a listing that says only "stainless steel" usually signals lower quality, and many listings here say only "Steel" or "Stainless Steel." Every OTF in stock that lists D2 costs $48, and all but one pair it with a G-10 handle. 440C shows up at $40 and at $52. The AUS-8 listings all use aircraft-alloy handles and cost $75 to $83. BladeOps notes that D2 is tough but needs care to prevent rust. Our knife steel guide compares the grades.
Price is where this list has an honest limit. BladeOps puts every OTF under $150 in its budget tier. Urban EDC says quality OTFs start around $100, calls $100 to $200 entry-level, and puts the best value at $200 to $300. Every OTF here costs under $85. Our order data shows what buyers chose. It cannot show how a mechanism holds up after a year of daily carry, and anyone planning hard daily use should weigh those opinions.
Care, sharpening and blade play
Urban EDC notes that the open front lets dirt and lint into the mechanism. It advises cleaning the blade before retracting it and lubricating every 2 to 3 weeks for light daily carry. BladeOps recommends a dry or Teflon-based lubricant, used sparingly. Knife Depot says an OTF blade can be sharpened like any other knife, with the blade fully deployed. BladeOps puts most OTF edges at 20 to 25 degrees per side and advises light pressure, followed by a leather strop.
Some side-to-side wobble with the blade out is normal. Urban EDC says OTFs typically show it, and BladeOps says only excessive movement may point to internal wear. For hard use, Knife Depot suggests a traditional folder or a fixed blade knife, and Urban EDC recommends light-to-medium cutting over prying or batoning. BladeOps also recommends a secondary safety switch for buyers who want one. Only two OTF listings in stock show a safety, and the Contrast Android is one. Automatic knife rules vary by place, so check your state and city rules before ordering.
How we ranked these
The picks are what buyers chose with their own money. Within each size band, they are ranked by 30-day order dollar volume across the South Summit store network, highest first. Every pick was in stock on the day of publication. Nothing here was tested hands-on, and nothing is sponsored. Four picks carry a listed Hello Kitty theme. South Summit is not affiliated with the brand's owner, and these knives are not sold as licensed merchandise. The full range is on our OTF knives page.

Questions buyers ask
Which OTF knife is best for a first-time buyer?
A mid-size double action with a clip. We would start with the Vector Surge at $39.99. If you want a named steel, look at the D2 listings at $48.
What size OTF knife should I get?
For pocket carry, about 7.25 to 8.5 inches overall with a 3-inch blade. A mini near 5.25 inches fits a small pocket, and a full-size knife with a sheath fits a bag or belt.
Is single action or double action better?
Double action is easier for daily use because one switch opens and closes it. Knife Depot and BladeOps both describe single action, which retracts manually, as the simpler and more rugged design.
Can you sharpen an OTF knife?
Yes. Knife Depot says OTF blades sharpen like any other knife with the blade fully deployed, and BladeOps puts most OTF edges at 20 to 25 degrees per side.
What is the point of an OTF knife?
The blade comes straight out the front of the handle at the push of a switch, and on a double action it goes back the same way, all with one hand. Urban EDC notes that most are unsuited to jobs that put strong sideways force on the blade.
