Single Action vs Double Action OTF: Which to Buy

By South Summit Team. Updated November 4, 2026. Every pick was in stock at the listed price when this was published.

Single action vs double action OTF: most buyers should get a double action. One slide fires the blade out and pulls it back in, and on this shelf a double action costs about the same as a single action of similar size. The one we would hand most people is the Vector Surge Front-Switch OTF Knife - Blue Damascus at $39.99. Its listing says double action, a 3-inch spear point, 4.375 inches closed and 2.85 ounces, with a pocket clip and a deluxe sheath. It is also the best-selling double action we stock. Skip it if you open your knife only a few times a day and a two-hand reset doesn't bother you. In that case look at the single-action Golden Current, which lists the same blade length, closed length, weight and price.

How we ranked these

These are what buyers chose with their own money over the last 30 days. The score is order dollar volume across the store network, and every pick was in stock on the day of publication. We did not test the knives by hand, and nobody paid to be listed. We split the OTF catalog by the action written in each product record, then kept the five highest-scoring knives of each type in score order. Knives whose record names neither action were left out. That removed four of the 20 best-selling OTFs, including the second-best seller.

What the top 20 sellers show

At the top of the shelf, single action sells as well as double. Of the 20 best-selling OTF knives, nine list single action, seven list double and four list neither. Three of the five best-selling single actions are pink Kawaii models.

Knife Depot and eKnives both say double actions usually cost more. On this shelf that mostly doesn't hold. The seven double actions in the top 20 cost from $29.99 to $42.99. The nine single actions run from the $15.99 Kawaii Contrast mini to the $75.99 Aero Trigger, and seven of those nine cost between $36 and $40. Across the whole catalog, double actions start under $12, single actions start under $14, and both types have models above $75.

Single action vs double action OTF: how each one works

On a double action, the same switch extends and retracts the blade. On a single action, the switch only fires the blade and you reset it separately. Knife Depot describes pulling the blade back by hand, which re-cocks the spring. eKnives describes a charging handle. Our product records don't say which reset a given single action uses.

TEKTO, a knife maker, explains the trade. A single action's spring stays compressed while the knife is closed. TEKTO says single actions "tend to fire harder and faster" and are "known for solid lockup." Because that spring stays loaded, it adds, many single actions come with a safety or a recessed button. In our stock only two OTF records list a safety, one of each action: the Pocket Sentinel single-action mini at $13.99 and the Contrast Android double action at $37.99. None of the ten picks below lists one.

On double actions, TEKTO calls a little side-to-side movement at the tip normal, and says to have the knife looked at if that play gets worse over time. It also says a double action retracts as fast as it fires, which a single action cannot match.

On opening speed, the pages we read lean the same way. TEKTO says single actions tend to fire faster, SwordsSwords calls them the fastest, and eKnives says some double actions deploy more slowly. None of them publishes comparative test data. For the mechanism in more depth, read how OTF knives work.

Double-action picks

1. Vector Surge Front-Switch OTF Knife - Blue Damascus

Vector Surge Front-Switch OTF Knife - Blue Damascus

Our pick for most buyers. Of the five doubles, only the Quiet Resolve is shorter closed, and this is the only one that lists a deluxe sheath. At a listed 2.85 ounces it weighs about a third of the Road Heritage. Its record gives no blade or handle material. See the Vector Surge.

2. Road Heritage Double-Action OTF Knife - Matte Black

Road Heritage Double-Action OTF Knife - Matte Black

Choose this one for a fuller handle. It is over an inch longer closed than the Vector Surge, has a rubber grip and lists 7.89 ounces. For $3 more you also get a nylon holster with the clip. See the Road Heritage.

3. Silent Vector Double-Action OTF Knife - Midnight Black

Silent Vector Double-Action OTF Knife - Midnight Black

It has the longest blade of the five doubles, a 4-inch stainless dagger, and the second-lowest price. The cost is length in the pocket, since it is 5.75 inches closed. See the Silent Vector.

4. Stealth Grip Quick-Strike OTF Knife - Black Rubberized

Stealth Grip Quick-Strike OTF Knife - Black Rubberized

This is the double for someone who wants a tanto with more blade than the Quiet Resolve: 3.25 inches against 2.625. It is also the only one of the ten listed with a MOLLE nylon sheath. See the Stealth Grip.

5. Quiet Resolve Patriot OTF Knife - Gray Flag

Quiet Resolve Patriot OTF Knife - Gray Flag

It is the lowest-priced and shortest double here, $10 under the Vector Surge. In return you get a shorter blade (2.625 inches) and a zinc alloy handle with a USA flag print. See the Quiet Resolve.

Single-action picks

1. Kawaii Quickdraw Front-Slide OTF Knife - Pink Aluminum

Kawaii Quickdraw Front-Slide OTF Knife - Pink Aluminum

This is the best-selling OTF in stock of either action. Its listed size and weight are within a fraction of the Vector Surge's, and it costs $3 less. Buy it if you want the Hello Kitty theme and don't mind resetting the blade by hand. See the Kawaii Quickdraw.

2. Kawaii Rebellion Front-Switch OTF Knife - Pink Dagger

Kawaii Rebellion Front-Switch OTF Knife - Pink Dagger

It lists the same size, weight and price as the Quickdraw. Pick it for the black dagger blade, but note that its handle is listed as plastic, while the Quickdraw lists aluminum. See the Kawaii Rebellion.

3. Kawaii Contrast Hello Kitty Mini OTF Knife - Pink Aluminum

Kawaii Contrast Hello Kitty Mini OTF Knife - Pink Aluminum

The only mini of the ten, at about half the price of the next-cheapest pick. It is the one for a buyer who wants the smallest knife, 3.25 inches closed, and can live with a 2-inch blade. See the Kawaii Contrast.

4. Golden Current Front-Switch OTF Knife - Gold Damascus

Golden Current Front-Switch OTF Knife - Gold Damascus

This is the closest single-action match to the Vector Surge: the listed blade length, closed length, weight, price and deluxe sheath are all the same. The records differ on action and finish (gold Damascus here, blue Damascus etch on the Vector Surge). The Golden Current also lists steel and a metal handle, and the Vector Surge record gives neither material. See the Golden Current.

5. Aero Trigger Blackout OTF Knife - Midnight Black

Aero Trigger Blackout OTF Knife - Midnight Black

It costs $36 more than the Golden Current. On the listings, the extra money buys a named steel, AUS-8, and an anodized aircraft alloy handle. Of the other nine picks, eight list only "steel" or "stainless steel", and the Vector Surge lists no blade material. If neither feature is on your list, the Golden Current is the better buy. See the Aero Trigger.

How to choose double action vs single action OTF knives

  • If you will open and close the knife many times a day, get a double action. Knife Depot recommends double action for speed and convenience in everyday carry, and TEKTO says it is "the one to buy" for most people who carry an OTF daily.
  • Consider a single action if you put a simple mechanism ahead of a one-hand close. Knife Depot says single actions have fewer moving parts, are easier to clean and service, and have strong lockup. It shows no test data.
  • If you want a safety, check the listing before you buy. TEKTO says many single actions add one, but in this store only two OTF records list it.
  • Cleaning: Knife Depot says double actions need regular cleaning for smooth action. TEKTO suggests a single drop of light oil where the blade enters the handle and says not to open the handle.
  • Warranty: TEKTO's page points to its own lifetime warranty against defects. Our product records do not list warranty terms.
  • Size: compare closed length and listed weight. Across these ten, closed length runs from 3.25 to 5.75 inches, and listed weight from 2.75 to 7.89 ounces.

Every knife here is in the OTF knives collection. If you are also weighing folders and fixed blades, see the best knives under $50.

Questions buyers ask

Is single action better than double action?

For most buyers, no. A double action opens and closes on one slide. A single action suits a buyer who is fine with a manual reset and wants what TEKTO says single actions tend to give: a harder fire and solid lockup.

Is a single action OTF more reliable?

Knife Depot says the simpler mechanism often lasts longer under heavy use, and that well-built double actions stay durable if you keep them clean. None of the pages we read shows test results.

Do double action OTF knives cost more?

General guides say they usually do. Here, the seven double actions among the top 20 sellers cost $29.99 to $42.99, which falls inside the single-action range.

Are single action OTF knives legal?

Check your state and city rules before ordering.
