Ignore the Voltage Wars
Stun gun manufacturers love advertising voltage: 10 million volts, 50 million volts, 100 million volts. The numbers keep climbing, but here is the reality: voltage alone does not determine effectiveness.
Voltage determines the spark gap — how far the electrical arc can jump between the probes. Higher voltage means a wider arc, which helps penetrate thicker clothing. But the actual stopping power comes from amperage (current) and the duration of contact. All commercial stun guns operate in a safe amperage range that causes pain and muscle disruption without permanent injury.
Instead of chasing the highest voltage number, focus on features that actually affect performance.
Features That Matter
Probe Design and Spacing
Wider probe spacing means the electrical current travels through more muscle tissue, creating a stronger effect. Look for probes spaced at least 1.5 inches apart. Some models feature prongs at the top and bottom of the device for maximum spread.
Rechargeable Battery
Modern stun guns should be USB rechargeable. Disposable battery models are outdated and unreliable — a dead battery at the wrong moment defeats the purpose of carrying. Rechargeable models maintain consistent output and eliminate the ongoing cost of replacement batteries.
Built-In Flashlight
Most quality stun guns include an LED flashlight. This is not a gimmick — it makes the device dual-purpose for everyday carry. You will use the flashlight daily and the stun function hopefully never. A stun gun without a light sits in a drawer. A stun gun with a light goes in your pocket.
Safety Switch
A physical safety switch prevents accidental discharge in your pocket or purse. Look for models with a clear on-off safety that requires deliberate activation. Avoid models that fire with a single button press and no safety.
Size and Disguise
Stun guns come in multiple form factors:
- Standard — Traditional stun gun shape. Clear purpose, easy to grip.
- Flashlight style — Looks and functions as a normal flashlight. Dual-purpose and discreet.
- Cell phone style — Disguised as a smartphone. Maximum concealment.
- Lipstick or compact style — Small enough for a purse or clutch.
- Baton style — Extended reach. Combines impact deterrence with electrical discharge.
How to Use a Stun Gun Effectively
- Target large muscle groups — The neck, shoulder, torso, and thigh are the most effective contact points. Avoid bony areas like elbows and shins.
- Maintain contact — A brief touch causes pain. Sustained contact (3 to 5 seconds) causes muscle disruption and temporary incapacitation. Longer is more effective.
- Use the arc as deterrence first — Activating the stun gun in the air produces a visible arc and loud crackling. This display alone stops many confrontations.
- Pair with distance tools — A stun gun requires contact. Carry pepper spray as your primary distance tool and the stun gun as your close-quarters backup.
Legal Considerations
Stun guns are legal in most US states but face restrictions in some jurisdictions. A few states require permits, some cities ban them entirely, and age restrictions apply in many areas. Check your state and local laws before purchasing.
