Crossbow Buying Guide: Pistol Crossbows vs. Full-Size, and What the Specs Mean

The primary split in the crossbow market is between pistol crossbows (compact, one-hand draw, lower draw weight, shorter range) and full-size crossbows (rifle-like stock, significant draw weight, optics-equipped, legitimate 50-yard accuracy). Pistol crossbows are the entry-level option — affordable, easy to use at close range, suitable for target practice at 15–25 yards. Full-size crossbows are serious tools that deliver accuracy and power in a completely different category.

Draw weight is the key performance spec — it determines bolt velocity, which determines range and kinetic energy on impact. Pistol crossbows typically run 50–80 lbs draw weight, producing velocities around 150–200 fps. Full-size crossbows run 150–200+ lbs, producing 300–400+ fps. At those velocities, a full-size crossbow is a legitimate hunting implement.

Crossbow Safety Fundamentals

Never dry-fire a crossbow — the string absorbs the energy that would normally accelerate the bolt, and dry-firing can destroy the string, limbs, or cam system in a single shot. Always use bolts rated for your draw weight. Treat a cocked crossbow with exactly the same respect as a loaded firearm — because the physics are equivalent.
