How to Choose a Holster That Fits Your Gun, Your Carry, and Your Life

The holster decision has five variables: carry position, retention level, material, concealability requirement, and your specific handgun model. All five have to align. A holster that nails four of five is still a holster that fails when you need it. The most common purchasing mistake is buying based on appearance without verifying gun model compatibility — always confirm the exact model designation matches your firearm before purchasing.

Inside-the-waistband (IWB) carry is the dominant concealed carry position because the waistband provides a stable, consistent platform that positions the gun at the same point regardless of clothing or movement. The tradeoff is comfort — a gun inside the waistband requires a belt that supports the weight without sag. Outside-the-waistband (OWB) is more comfortable for extended wear but requires covering clothing for concealment.

Kydex vs. Leather vs. Hybrid Holsters

Kydex is the working holster material for most serious carry applications — it holds its shape indefinitely, provides consistent retention, doesn't absorb moisture, and presents the gun at the same angle and depth on every draw. Leather is more comfortable against the body but requires a break-in period and can soften with moisture over time. Hybrid holsters (Kydex shell, leather backing) offer comfortable leather feel with Kydex retention characteristics. For daily carry: Kydex or hybrid.
