How to Buy a Quality Sword That's Worth Owning

The sword market has a wider quality range than almost any other collectible weapon category — from $40 wall hangers that flex by hand to $500+ functional pieces that hold an edge, survive test cutting, and age gracefully for decades. The gap between these categories is enormous, and the price difference reflects construction, materials, and heat treatment that aren't visible in a photograph.

For decorative wall display: appearance and proportional accuracy matter most. A wall hanger in the $60–150 range from a quality supplier looks excellent and holds up in a climate-controlled interior. For collection or occasional handling: step up to carbon steel construction with full-tang build and quality handle materials. For actual cutting practice: carbon steel blade, correct balance, and proper temper are non-negotiable.

Sword Maintenance for Collectors

Steel swords require active maintenance to prevent rust. Wipe down the blade after handling — fingerprints transfer salt and oil that cause surface rust. Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or purpose-made sword oil to bare steel surfaces every few months, more frequently in humid environments. Store horizontally when possible to avoid stress on blade-to-tang connections.
