Lighting

A great flashlight isn't a flashlight — it's confidence in the dark. The right tactical light does its job when nothing else is working: power's out, situation has changed, and you need to see clearly before anything else can happen.

How to Choose a Tactical Flashlight That Actually Earns Its Place in Your Kit

Lumen ratings are marketing. Runtime is real life. A 2,000-lumen flashlight that runs at full output for 15 minutes before stepping down to 300 lumens is less useful than an 800-lumen light that holds clean for 3 hours. Read the full runtime specs — quality manufacturers publish runtime curves at multiple output levels, which tells you how the light actually behaves rather than just what it peaks at briefly.

For EDC pocket lights, 300–800 lumens on high covers most real-world needs, with a low mode under 30 lumens for close-range tasks and preserving night vision. For tactical use, 500–1,000+ lumens with a momentary-on mode and dedicated tail switch covers the serious end of the use case.

What Actually Makes a Flashlight Tactical?

Not lumens. It's the mode interface (accessible under stress with gloves on), switch position (activatable without adjusting grip), tail cap design (flat bottom allows tail-standing as a lantern), bezel material (strike-capable if needed), and water and impact resistance ratings. A well-designed 400-lumen light with direct access to high and low outperforms a 1,200-lumen light with a 6-mode interface.
