Tactical Vests and Chest Rigs: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

Tactical vests and chest rigs serve the same fundamental function — carrying equipment on the torso — with different coverage and weight profiles. A chest rig covers only the front of the torso — lighter, more ventilated, simpler to don and doff. A full tactical vest adds back panel coverage and often integrates with plate carrier functionality. For most recreational range and competition use: a chest rig is the lighter, more practical choice.

MOLLE webbing coverage determines how much gear you can attach. A minimalist chest rig might have three to five rows of MOLLE — sufficient for magazine pouches, a radio pouch, and a utility pouch. A full-coverage vest with 8–12 rows on front and back supports serious load-bearing configurations. Match the coverage to your actual gear list.

Sizing a Tactical Vest Correctly

Tactical vests use adjustable shoulder straps and cummerbund systems rather than standard clothing sizing. The fit should position the front panel flat against your chest without gapping, ride high enough for your lowest magazine pouch to clear a seated waistline, and adjust tight enough that the rig doesn't shift during movement when loaded. Try the vest loaded with your intended gear — an empty vest fits very differently than a loaded one.
