Ballistic Plates: Level III vs. Level III+ vs. Level IV — What You Actually Need

NIJ ballistic armor ratings define what threats specific levels stop. Level III hard armor stops standard rifle threats through .308 Winchester (7.62x51 NATO). Level III+ is an informal designation indicating protection against common higher-velocity threats like M193 and M855 5.56 rounds. Level IV plates stop armor-piercing rounds including .30 caliber AP. Steel plates are heavier (approximately 7–8 lbs each for a 10x12) but extremely durable and affordable. Steel plates produce spall on impact — quality steel plates have spall coatings that mitigate this significantly. Polyethylene (PE) and UHMWPE plates are lighter (3–5 lbs each) and produce no spall, but cost significantly more. Plate Sizing and Coverage

The standard 10x12 inch plate covers the vital zone for most medium and large builds. Smaller shooters may need a 9x11 to achieve correct positioning — top edge below throat, lower edge above navel. Measure your torso from suprasternal notch to navel before purchasing. Proper placement matters more than having the largest plate available.
