Does Pepper Spray Expire? Shelf Life, Storage and When to Replace It

By South Summit Team. Updated November 5, 2026. Every pick was in stock at the listed price when this was published.

Does pepper spray expire? Yes. Most cans carry a date, usually on the bottom, and the makers and sellers we read put shelf life at two to five years. The propellant loses pressure and the pepper extract (OC) can weaken, and an old can may spray short or leak. Replace it by the printed date, or sooner if it was stored hot. For a half-ounce replacement, most buyers should get the WindGuard hardshell spray at $6.99. It has the highest 30-day order dollar volume of any spray we stock, and half an ounce is our most common listed size (8 of the 20 sprays). Its listing does not mention a keychain. If you need a can for your keys, the top-ranked spray with "Keychain" in its name is Instinct Shield at $5.99. Skip both if the can lives at home. The 2 oz Calm Radius foam can holds four times as much as a half-ounce can for $8.99.

How we ranked these

The list is ordered by 30-day order dollar volume across the South Summit store network. It shows what buyers chose with their own money over the last month. Every pick was in stock on the day this was published. Nobody tested these cans for this article, and nothing here is sponsored. We left the three pepper spray holsters out of the ranking because they hold a can and are not one.

One gap you should know about: our product records do not list a shelf life or an expiration date for any of these sprays. Check the date on the can when it arrives and write it down where you will see it again.

Why does pepper spray expire?

Guard Dog Security's help page gives two reasons for the date. Oleoresin capsicum, the active ingredient, "can degrade over time," and aerosol cans "become less pressurized over time." Prepared Hero adds that parts like the seals and nozzle wear out too, and that heat and cold speed all of it up.

Lost pressure is the failure people notice. A police-supply store owner interviewed by WVLT said weaker pressure in an old can can make it leak and cut how far it sprays. He put the life of the cans he sold at four to five years. A can can look perfect on the outside and still be past this point.

How to choose a replacement and keep it in date

Read the date first

Guard Dog says the date is usually printed on the bottom of the can. Not every can has one: the WVLT story covered cans with no printed date, and one owner whose can had expired months earlier without her noticing. If you find no date, check the packaging or the maker's guidance. If you also cannot remember when you bought it, Prepared Hero's advice is to replace it.

How long does pepper spray last?

The figures we read start at about two years (Prepared Hero's general estimate). Guard Dog gives four years for its own product, the WVLT store owner said four to five, and invisaWear says two to five. Guard Dog still suggests a new can every one to two years, and says to replace it before the printed date. In that advice the date is a deadline, and the new can should be in hand before it.

Does pepper spray go bad in a hot car?

Heat shortens its life. invisaWear puts ideal storage at 50 to 70°F, out of sunlight, and says temperatures below 32°F can affect how far it sprays. Prepared Hero says to store it upright and not in the car. If your can rode on a dashboard all summer, replace it early.

Test it, then decide

WVLT and invisaWear both say to test every few months. Prepared Hero says every three to six months and notes that some people test once a year. Give it a short burst outdoors, away from people and pets, and not into the wind. Replace the can if the stream is weak or if it leaks. Each test uses up spray, and a half-ounce can at $5.99 is cheap to swap when the date gets close.

Match the size to where the can lives

The in-stock range by listed size:

  • 1/2 oz cans: 8 models, $5.99 to $6.99 (7 of them have "Keychain" in the name; WindGuard does not)
  • 1.5 oz snap-off cans: 2 models at $15.99
  • 2 to 4 oz home cans: 4 models, $8.99 to $11.99
  • 9 and 16 oz foggers: 2 models, $29.99 and $56.99
  • No size listed: 4 models, $6.99 to $7.99, including the rhinestone keychains such as Glam Guard ($7.99)

Replace like with like, unless the old can never got carried. In that case, put a larger can where it actually stays. For the differences between spray formats, read how to choose pepper spray. Pepper spray expiration questions

Does expired pepper spray still work?

It might, but you cannot count on it. An old can can lose enough pressure to spray short or leak, and the OC inside may have weakened. Replace it.

Does pepper spray expire if not used?

Yes. Guard Dog says aerosol cans lose pressure over time whether or not they are used, and Prepared Hero says to replace a can past its date even if it has never been sprayed.

Does pepper spray have an expiration date?

Most cans do, usually printed on the bottom. If yours has none, check the packaging or the maker's guidance, and replace it if you do not know when you bought it.

How long does pepper spray last after the expiration date?

None of the sources we read gives a safe grace period past the date. Guard Dog recommends replacing the can before it expires.

Does pepper spray gel expire?

Yes. Guard Dog's guidance covers spray and gel alike: replace either one before the date. None of the sprays in stock today are listed as gel.
