Gun Cases: Hard vs. Soft and What You Actually Need for Your Use Case

Hard gun cases offer the highest protection and meet federal regulations for firearm transport via airline — TSA requires a hard-sided, lockable case for checked firearm transport. The tradeoff is weight and bulk. For air travel, competition shooting, and securing firearms during vehicle transport: hard cases are the right tool. Look for double-throw latches, lockable hasps, and foam that can be trimmed to fit your specific firearm.

Soft cases are lighter, easier to carry for range trips, and provide enough protection for ground transport by vehicle. A quality soft case in 600D or 1000D nylon with a padded interior protects a firearm from scratches and minor impacts adequately for range use. They shouldn't be used for airline transport and should never be used for unsecured storage.

Discreet vs. Obvious Gun Cases

A recognizable hard rifle case is an advertisement for theft during vehicle stops and parking lot pauses. Cases that look like regular luggage protect the firearm equally well while not flagging the contents to casual observation. For any situation where the vehicle will be unattended, a discreet case is a meaningful security decision.
