Neck Knives: The Case for a Fixed Blade Nobody Can See

Neck knives solve a specific problem elegantly: having a fixed blade immediately accessible without advertising it to everyone around you. A belt-carry fixed blade is visible. A pocket folder requires hand movement to open. A neck knife rides under your shirt at mid-chest, drawable with one hand in a motion that reads as nothing from the outside.

The tradeoffs are size and blade length. Most neck knives run 2–3 inch blades in lightweight sheaths designed to sit flat under clothing. Enough for utility tasks and a serious emergency option — not a replacement for a full fixed blade when hard work is required. Think of it as your guaranteed-to-be-there blade.

What to Look for in a Neck Knife

The sheath matters as much as the blade. A neck knife sheath needs to hold securely during movement, allow clean one-hand draw, and sit flat enough against the chest to not print through a t-shirt. Kydex sheaths are the standard — they hold their shape, provide consistent snap-fit retention, and never absorb moisture. A quality sheath on a decent blade beats a great blade in a poor sheath every time.
