Tactical Backpacks: How to Choose the Right Size and Configuration

Backpack size is always a compromise between capacity and carry comfort. A 20L tactical pack is the sweet spot for day carry, range trips, and EDC — large enough to carry a full kit including water, first aid, ammunition, and spare gear, but not so large it becomes a burden when loaded. 30–40L packs move into multi-day or serious equipment carry, where the capacity is genuinely needed but the pack and load combination demands proper fit.

For range use: internal organization matters more than external MOLLE. A range bag needs magazine pouches, a protected pistol or rifle section, a maintenance kit compartment, and storage for ear and eye protection. External MOLLE adds flexibility but isn't the primary function at a range. For field use: external MOLLE lets you configure the bag for the mission.

Hydration Compatibility: Why It Matters

A hydration bladder compartment is one of the most useful features on any tactical backpack for active outdoor or field use. Hands-free water access — simply drinking through a bite valve without stopping to open your pack — is meaningful over hours of movement, both for hydration consistency and situational awareness. Look for a dedicated hydration sleeve, top exit for the hose, and a hose clip on the shoulder strap.
