The best double action OTF knives for most buyers have a mid-size blade of about 2.5 to 3 inches, a pocket clip and a listed steel. The one we would hand most people is the Battle-Born Patriot Tactical OTF Knife ($29.99). For the smallest and cheapest, get a 2-inch mini. For more blade, see the 4-inch models further down. You do not need to choose between single and double action here. In the owner's words: "Every OTF knife we sell is double action. We do not carry single-action OTF knives." Below are 15 picks from our OTF knives, ranked by what buyers spent on them in the last 30 days.
For background on how the mechanism works, read OTF knives explained. This page is about which one to buy.

How we ranked these
Every pick was in stock on the day of publication. They are ranked by 30-day order dollar volume across the South Summit store network, highest first, which means buyers chose them with their own money. We did not test any of them by hand, and no one paid for a place on the list. The ranking measures dollars spent, not units sold, so a $42.99 knife can outrank a $15.99 knife that sold more pieces. Descriptions come from each product's listed specifications. When a spec is not listed, we say so.

Named steel: Aero-Track X-Switch Precision OTF Knife - Hard Anodized Black
Every OTF here that lists AUS-8 steel also lists an aircraft alloy handle and costs between $75 and $83. At $78.99, this one leads them in spending. It has a 3.5-inch straight blade, a switch and a clip, and lists 3.6 oz.
How to choose a double action OTF knife
Start with closed length, because it decides which pocket the knife fits. Among the picks above, the minis close at 3.25 to 3.375 inches and the 3-inch knives at 4.375 to 4.5. The 4-inch Silent Vector and Shadow Ridge both close at 5.75.
Steel comes next. Knife Depot puts 440C and 9Cr18MoV in the budget tier, "serviceable for light use", and lists 154CM or D2 as mid-range steels with "an excellent balance of performance and value." Many listings here say only "steel" or "stainless steel". If you want a named grade, choose a listing that gives one, such as the D2 and AUS-8 models above.
For the handle, Knife Depot says G-10 "offers excellent grip especially in wet conditions" and calls aluminum and titanium lightweight and strong. Our listings also include zinc alloy, rubber, carbon fiber and plastic.
The control is one switch for both directions. TEKTO describes it as a slider on the face of the handle: push it forward to fire the blade out, pull it back to bring it home. Our listings call this a front switch, thumb slide, slider or button, depending on the model. We have not compared how each one feels.
Plan for upkeep. Knife Depot says double action knives "may need more frequent upkeep," and that lint and debris in the blade channel "can slow or impede deployment." Clear the channel with compressed air, add one small drop of light oil, and do not over-oil, because excess oil attracts debris. TEKTO also warns against opening the handle. On blade play, TEKTO says "a little side-to-side movement at the tip is normal" on a double action.
Check your state and city rules before ordering.
Double action OTF questions
How does a double action OTF knife work?
The same slider or button deploys and retracts the blade. TEKTO notes that the spring sits relaxed when the knife is closed and when it is open.
Single vs double action OTF knife: which can I buy here?
Only double action. A single action OTF fires the blade out automatically, but you push it back in by hand. South Summit does not stock single-action OTF knives.
Is there a double action OTF knife with a safety?
Three of our OTFs list a safety: the Shadow Crossline ($39.99), the Contrast Android ($37.99) and the Pocket Sentinel ($13.99).
What is the best double action OTF knife under $50?
For most buyers, the Battle-Born Patriot at $29.99. If you want D2 steel and a 4-inch blade, the Shadow Ridge is $47.99. For a curved blade, see our karambit rankings.
Why won't my double action OTF fire all the way?
TEKTO says the blade stops short if it meets resistance, and that one more pull back and push forward resets it. If it keeps happening, clean the blade channel as described above.
