Hammer-back, beak, or throwing

Hammer-back hatchets (Hammerback, Outpost, Shadow Arc Trail) have a flat poll for driving stakes and a wedge edge for splitting kindling: the camp tool. Beak-style tactical axes (Stealth Beak) have a spike or beak opposite the edge and a shaped handle; they are bought for the look and as a breaching-style tool. Throwing axes (Shadow Arc Throwing) are balanced for rotation, not for chopping; see the throwing-axe set in best throwing knives too.

Handle: wood or synthetic

Wood handles (three of the five) absorb shock and can be replaced; keep them oiled. The blackout tactical axe and throwing axe use full-tang steel with wrap or synthetic grips, which will not break but transmit more shock. For camp, wood; for throwing or hard knocks, full tang.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tactical hatchet?

The Stealth Beak by orders; for a camp tool, the Hammerback hatchet.

Can I throw a camp hatchet?

You can, but a balanced throwing axe rotates predictably and a camp hatchet does not. Buy the throwing axe for throwing.

Wood or full-tang hatchet?

Wood for comfort and camp use; full tang for durability.
