Choosing Your First Blowgun: Caliber, Length, and What to Expect

Blowguns come in two main calibers: .40 and .50. The .40 caliber guns are lighter and faster — ideal for target shooting and learning technique. The .50 caliber guns hit harder with more dart mass, which matters for anything beyond backyard plinking. Most beginners start with a .40 and move up once breath technique is dialed in.

Length matters more than people expect. A longer barrel gives the dart more travel time inside the tube, which means more consistent velocity and better accuracy at distance. A 48-inch gun outperforms a 24-inch at range. But shorter is easier to handle and store. Start at 36 inches if you're not sure — the practical middle ground.

Tips for Better Blowgun Accuracy

It's all breath control. A single sharp, short burst beats a long sustained blow — you're creating a pressure spike, not sustaining pressure. Stand square to your target, keep the gun level. Practice at 10–15 feet before moving out. Once you're consistently hitting a quarter-sized target at close range, distance comes fast.
